Barcelona defensive midfielder, Jonathan Dos Santos has reportedly agreed to join Real Sociedad on a season-long loan, but Barcelona are reluctant to grant the Mexican international permission until the matter can be discussed with manager, Tata Martino.
Spanish media are reporting today that Jonathan Dos Santos has agreed to an emergency loan move
to Real Sociedad. While the transfer season is officially over, FIFA
allows clubs to petition to sign players on loan in the case of a
long-term injury, such as the ACL tear Esteban Granero suffered last
Tuesday against Shakhtar Donetsk which has left the Basque club
understaffed in the midfield department. Dos Santos admitted that he was
very close to making a move to La Real
this summer, but Gerardo Martino trusted in him and with a few words
encouraged him to stay. Martino’s general approach upon his arrival was
that he didn’t want to rush into any decisions, and probably didn’t want
to risk losing a squad player before getting to know his team.
However, the Mexican midfielder has featured very little in Barça’s opening eight games, although it’s also true the team has had an unusually difficult preliminary fixtures. Reportedly the player, Real Sociedad, and FC Barcelona’s board are all ready to make a deal, and the final decision remains with Tata Martino.
Dos Santos’ departure would free up more minutes for Sergi Roberto, who was far more impressive in preseason – but it is worth noting that the two have significantly different styles. Realistically, with the departure of Thiago Alcántara, Jonathan Dos Santos is Barça’s only backup option in a Xavi role, a pure central midfielder who circulates the ball and controls possession. His departure might be what’s best for the development of both himself and Sergi Roberto, but it would mean one more step for Tata Martino away from a safe, possession-based approach. A decision will likely be made this week.
